TIME TO SPOIL THE GRANDKIDS!!

We're heading to Salina tonight to help Todd and Melissa get settled into their new home. Need to take down a little wall paper and paint a couple rooms. But more important, we have some grandkids to spoil. Eric and Andrea are coming on Friday so both the grandbabies will be together. Should be fun. Also it will be the first time the whole family has been together for some time.

INTENTIONALITY!

Just a liitle update - the air conditioner was fixed Friday on the car - a sensor had burnt out and a little low on freon. Hallelujah, not the compressor!

Now then, tomorrow I will be preaching on what it means to be intentional about our faith development. You've heard the saying, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Well, I would like us act upon our intentions, not just talk about them. But who will hold us accountable? Ah, that might be the question.

Let me ask you all a question to ponder or to comment if you'd like. How intentional are you about growing in your faith in Jesus Christ. Said another way, what are doing to see that you are becoming more and more like Jesus? Bible study, men's group, women's group, Sunday School, etc?? What have you learned and applied to your life in the last month that reflects your growth in Christ? What would suggest that compared to a year ago, others would definitely notice that you have become more Christ-like?

Something to chew on.

STILL HOT AND MUGGY!! (Finally, a new bog)

M.L. and I left for Salina yesterday and got 20 miles out of town only to have our air conditioner give out. Needless to say, it was a hot drive. We did stop at Hays to see Marcellee at the hospital and thankfully the air conditioning worked there. Whew! We then stopped and got a strawberry milkshake and a cold drink and endured the rest of the trip to Salina. And guess what? The humidy hasn't left. It's still here from when we left 7 years ago.

Now you have to understand that I don't like hot and muggy. And to drive 3 1/2 hours without a/c is not my idea of a leisure Sunday afternoon drive. I started to gripe to M.L. and then realized, "what good will complaining do?" So we rolled down the windows and made the best of it. After all, there are a lot worse problems out there than me being without a/c.

Changing the subject, I officiated at a funeral service for the wife, mother, and grandmother of some good friends of ours in Salina. The service went very well and it was good to catch up with many of our friends in the Salina area - especially the Payne family. Condolences to them. Also, our prayers are with the Fruechting family. Gloria passed away and her funeral was today as well. M.L. and I were supposed to sing help with the music at her funeral but were obligated to the service in Salina. (Too many friends losing them moms lately). Praise God for the hope of the resurrection.

We went and saw the house Todd and Melissa are buying - very nice. We will help them move next week. They are really looking forward to it and we are very happy for them.

While we are here in Salina we feel it our "duty" to spend some time with our little grandson Owen. After all, someone has to do it and it might as well be us. He's doing great. Eating well, sleeping well, and keeping his grammy and gramps happy.

I met a man who lives next door to where Todd and Melissa are moving. I introduced myself and he said, "Oh yeah, I remember you from all the football games at Salina Central". I wonder what he meant by that??

Yes, we're tired but we're going to make it!

We are currently in the middle of the 4th day of the community VBS held here at the church. It has been a great time so far with 109 kids attending yesterday ( don't have today's count as of yet). The theme has focused upon the power of Jesus in our lives that we might be thankful, helpful, brave, assured of eternal life by faith, and empowered to tell others about God.



I truly appreciate VBS because it was when I was a kid attending Bible school in a little Baptist church in Marion, Kansas that I responded to the invitation to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. That is the intent of our VBS, to offer to these kids the life changing power of Jesus Christ in their lives. It's more than having fun and eating snacks, it's about responding to the great love of God through his son Jesus Christ to live life to its fullest - for now and eternity. I encourage you to pray for these kids and to offer a prayer of thanks to the many who gave of their time to be leaders for the week. What a blessing!

SUITING UP!

After a couple weeks of observation and reflection it is obvious to me that Satan is alive and well and is seeking to do all he can do to destroy people's lives (or at least disrupt them). I see it in the lives of our youth. I see it in the lives of parents. I see it in families. I see it in the erosion of commitment to Christ and His church. I see it in the exchange of priorities to where God is placed upon the back burner because of things seen as more important. Meanwhile - Satan smiles.

And this is not just on a local level. I've been in contact with many clergy and laity from other places and many can relate to the spiritual battle that we face. So what do we make of it? Is it a sign that God is at work and so the devil is working that much harder to defeat what God seeks to do in and through us? Or is it because we have disarmed ourselves, perhaps lost our focus, maybe even become lukewarm as it pertains to our passion for Christ? You can be sure Jesus has not lost his passion for us.

Whatever the answers to these questions are, I would like all who are reading this (local or otherwise) to seriously consider some of the following questions:

What is my priority as it relates to the Lord's Day?

How intentional am I regarding spiritual discipline? (Prayer, reading Scripture, meditation, attending worship, praise, etc.)

If a parent - what do my kids see in me that reflects Jesus as my #1 priority in life?

What do our neighbors or community have to say when it comes to our Christian witness?

Am I listening for God's voice on a daily basis?

How have I been obedient to the Lord this past week?

Have I reached out to others in love this past week?

There are more questions but these should get us to thinking. If these have not been a part of your reflective process, you can be sure the devil will replace these with other thoughts, other "things to do", other priorities.

Let me encourage you to be "strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes" (Eph. 6:10-11). It's a battle out there. Let's be reminded that our victory is in Jesus. But we may need to make a few adjustments to be victorious. Onward Christian soldiers!!

MONDAY MALARKEY!

I'm getting ready to head to Salina this afternoon for Annual Conference for the Kansas West Conference of the UMC. I'll get back Friday night. In the meantime I have some interviews tomorrow morning, some meetings tomorrow afternoon, the clergy session to begin the conference tomorrow night, and then the plenary session beginning on Wednesday morning. I speak at a banquet on Wednesday evening (pray for me) and I assist in worship on Friday morning. So a little busy this week. Here are a few comments, thoughts, or other misc.....


Kyle had a tough time at State track but still had a great time. Some days are diamonds.........

By the way, did I tell you I'm a grandpa again? (Just checking)

Brayden (grandson #1) is a hoot. But no wonder his momma is worn out at the end of the day.

Owen (grandson #2) is doing great. His momma is slowly recovering but doing well. His daddy is tired.

What a blast last Sunday night - (The wish-we -had-talent show. ) And boy do we wish we had talent. Thanks to all who participated. It's fun to laugh isn't it??

We all need a little levity in the midst of the busyness of life don't we? In the midst of some of the heaviness as of late it was good to come together as the family of God and smile, sing, eat, goof off, smile some more, and just have a good ole time.



We've lost some loved ones as of late so I've been busy with families and with funerals. Our prayers continue for Melissa and Esther (McDonell family), the Myrtle Crowley family, the Peggy Gish family, and for Michelle Sheppard whose mom passed away suddenly last weekend. Praise the Lord for the hope that the resurrection promises.

Tonight I am speaking to the youth in the community in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer. Keep me in your prayers if you would as I focus on the question, "Can you hear me now"?

Tomorrow we will gather at the courthouse at 7:00 am to pray, go to the elementary school to pray for our leaders and protectors in the community, grab a brown bag breakfast at the church, and go forward into the day. Many will be reading Scripture all day near the Alltell store. No matter where you are, take some time to pray (not only tomorrow) but every day.

Kyle turned 18 on Friday so we threw a surprise party for him with a few kids who obviously had nothing else to do on a Friday night. What a motley crew.

I don't think U2 has anything to worry about. All of the above are musically and intrumentally challenged. But who cares? They had fun!!

Also, thanks for the prayers for M.L's sister Betsy who is recuperating after a car accident that left her with a fractured neck and back and broken rib. She hopes to be leaving the hospital (Wesley) today. We'll see.

THE TOMB IS EMPTY!!

HE IS NOT HERE! HE IS RISEN, JUST AS HE SAID!!

DO WE REALLY BELIEVE IT??

A question - when we (who claim to be Christians) choose not to allow God to work in our lives when we are struggling, hurting, having relationship problems with our spouse, friend, or co-worker, need spiritual, mental, physical, or emotional healing, are weary and worn out, are feeling hopeless, or any other problem you can think of - isn't that a slap in God's face? Actually, if we proclaim that the God whom we serve can do all things, heal all hurts, restore all relationships, replace all heartache with joy, why do we not let him take it from us? Why do we keep hanging on to the stuff? Why do we think we have to be in control? Are we merely saying one thing and doing another? Is this thing called "faith" merely lip service? Is the God of the universe who spoke into being the very world in which we exist unable to help us?

I ask this question because we are preparing to celebrate the resurrection of Christ this Sunday. Yet I feel like many live under the shadow of Good Friday, stuck in a grave with a stone rolled over the entrance. We say we believe in resurrection, but do we really believe that new life is available, resurrected life?

I confess, it's probably my own frustration with many of the things that have occurred recently. But folks, Jesus has come into our world to give us new, joyful, abundant life. When we choose not to believe that and appropriate what he has done for us on the cross we are in essence saying, "God, I don't really believe you can do anything about my situation. This is too big for you. Besides, I don't want to go through what it takes for you to help me". Well, do we really think that Jesus wanted to go through the crucifixion and death on the cross, that he just couldn't wait to be whipped, and beaten, and spit upon, and mocked? Yet, because he loved us so much, he did it. And miracle upon miracle, death did not have the final say. He rose from the grave on the 3rd day just as he promised.

That same victory is available to all of us. But believing is more than empty words and empty proclamation. It is acting upon what we claim to believe and allowing God to go to work in the midst of what may seem to be even the worst of situations. There is power in the resurrection. There is power in the gospel. That power is available to us. Do we believe it???

BLESSED BY GOD!

We had a great time this past Sunday through Tuesday as Rev. Steve Rankin led us in a time of renewal. (Note previous blog). God blessed us with His presence as we gathered together for three days to praise and worship Him. What was especially wonderful was the response of the kids who each night flooded the altar to pray. We are grateful for Steve's leadership and appreciate his willingness to be used by God while here in Leoti.



I believe Steve is trying to make a point, don't you? He made several points as he preached from Hebrews regarding reverent submission, from 2 Corinthians as it pertained to the old giving way to the new, from Matthew 8 as it related to the intentionality of Jesus to touch the untouchables and for us to do the same, and from Ephesians 2 - God's working through Jesus to bring about a new humanity. Great stuff.

Yep, here we are, Rankin, Just, and Just, together again. What a great time to play and sing and lead worship. Hope you all enjoyed it. Most of all I pray God blessed you in our time of worship. God honored our prayers for renewal. May we be intentional about staying renewed as we seek to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

RANKIN AND RENEWAL!

This coming Sunday, the Rev. Steve Rankin will be our guest as he challenges us to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ and with each other. Steve comes to us from Winfield where he currently serves as a professor and campus minister at Southwestern College. He also is an ordained elder in the Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is a what I call our "resident scholar" in the conference. At the last annual conference he was nominated as a candidate for bishop by our conference. The jurisdictional conference this summer will determine the outcome of that nomination.

Steve is a well learned, bright, articulate leader in our conference and has served in a variety of ways in churches, colleges, and seminaries. That all is fine and good but what I like about Steve is he is just a good ole boy who happens to love Jesus and wants others to experience that love too. Steve was a student pastor at my church in Aulne in 1984 where we hit it off as good friends. Little did I know that Steve was mentoring me during those years at Aulne ( I was a little dense - I thought we were just eating pizza together). To make a long story short, it is because of Steve Rankin that I went into ministry. So you can either blame him or thank him when you see him on Sunday.

Both of us have a heart for renewal (or revival as some folks would like to call it). Both of us have been called into ministry to help people move from the bad news that they seem to find themselves in, to the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And I am very excited that Steve is coming to lead 3 days of services for us here in Leoti. The schedule is as follows:

A prayer vigil all day Saturday from 6:00 am - 12:00 midnight. Call the office if you have not yet signed up to pray (30 minute time slots).

Sunday, March 9 - Steve will preach during morning worship
- A pizza party for all youth at 5:00 pm - (6-12th grade)
- Evening service at 7:00 pm

Monday, March 10 - Women's luncheon at 11:45 a.m.
- Evening service at 7:00 pm

Tuesday, March 11 - Men's breakfast at 7:00 a.m.
- Evening potluck at 5:30 pm
- Evening service at 7:00 pm

There will be a children's time each service and a nursery will be provided.

I invite all who are able in this area to come to these special services. Even if you have to drive a ways, it will be worth it. But prior to the services I invite you to pray for God's Holy Spirit to prepare each and every heart of those who attend. Pray that God will tear down walls that are interfering with a right relationship with him. And pray that we will make ourselves available to what God wants to do in our lives as individuals and as a church. If we pray, God will move.

Hope to see all of you at church Sunday morning. God will not disappoint!

ALL GOOD THINGS.......

Kyle's basketball career came to an end last Tuesday night as the Indians ended up losing a hard fought ball game to Sublette. We lost by three after leading most of the game. However it was probably the most complete game Kyle played all year, not to mention one of the best efforts by the boys on the team all season. It was a disappointment to lose but I was very proud of how the kids fought to the last second.

Kyle, I'm proud of how hard you played night in and night out. As you know, life is much like the game of basketball. A lot of bounces go your way, and a lot don't. How you respond determines how well you play the game, specifically the game of life.

Hmm........, I'd say the same holds true for all of us. What say you?

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY!

What a great time I had with the folks in Vale, North Carolina this past week. I was there as a part of the World Methodist Council on Evangelism as I shared with the folks as it related to the Cornerstone Celebration, a local church ministry that lifts up Jesus Christ as the cornerstone of our faith as Christians. (I'll share more about this on Sunday). The picture above is the Bed and Breakfast where I stayed called De Starte'. Glenda Miller was a most gracious hostess.

Sunday afternoon I led a Faith-Sharing Workshop at the Hebron UMC. It was a great afternoon with about 30 in attendence for the workshop. We talked about the importance of sharing our faith with others and the fact that we are not in full compliance with Jesus' teachings if we choose to remain silent about what he has done and is doing in our lives.

The above is a cake with the Cornerstone logo imprinted on it. You might also notice that the them of the World Methodist Council on Evangelism is "That the world may know Jesus".

For you folks in North Carolina, thank you from the bottom of my heart. What a blessed time and what a joy to see God work the way he did. God truly was present in our time together. Please be intentional about your growth in Christ now that the "event" is over.

Also, thanks to all of you for the good food - wow!! It's some serious diet time now. (I mentioned livermush to the folks back here but they weren't overly interested).

For you here in Leoti, I'll fill you in on Sunday as I mix the pictures and experiences with the sermon. Hey, why not bring a friend? So here we go, back in the saddle again!

Sorry but the plate is real full this week - lots going on and traveling here and there. Leaving for N.C. on Friday - I'll try and post some pics for you from there.

LENT IS UPON US

Believe it or not, tomorrow begins the Lenten journey between Ash Wednesday and Easter. For many Christians, the day will include a service of ashes, or the imposition of ashes where the leader of the service will dip a thumb in ashes and make the sign of the cross on the forehead of each person. In doing so we recall our own mortality as well as our need for repentance in response to God's gracious gift of forgiveness and everlasting life through His Son Jesus. Sadly, for many people this service is seen as "too Catholic" or "too high church". I was raised in a church that thought much that way.

But for me, I think of two things. First of all, the ashes. Let's be honest, ashes are merely the burnt leftovers of what once was. If a house burns, the ashes are all that's left of the house where a family once lived, ate, laughed, cried, and grew up together. Ashes could be what is left of a burnt church building - I experienced that in Salina. The musical intruments, the hymnals, the bibles, the altar, the communion rail - nothing left but the ashes. For some, personal belongings go up in smoke - letters, diarys, quilts, clothes, children's school papers and pictures - all gone except for the ashes. Ashes often represent pain, heartache, sorrow, hopelessness - a yearning for that which once was, a desire for restoration of joy and happiness. Ah, yes. That's where the cross comes in.

The cross - a symbol that is tatooed on people's arms, worn on a chain around people's necks, on all kinds of jewelry, on the cover of cds, and on the front and back of clothing. And yet, for the people of Jesus' day, it represented a most horrible method of suffering and death. People could only turn their heads as they came into town for that is where they hung people on the cross - right on the edge of town so everyone could see, signifying that you'd better stay in line or this is what will happen to you. The cross - the symbol of torture and of ultimate death. It would be like us placing a symbol of an electric chair around our neck. How wierd is that?

Yet the irony of it all is the cross is what helps us overcome the ashes. The cross enables us to be restored, to return to that which was once good, to give us joy, and hope, and happiness. The power of the cross is realized as we come to grips with the fact that Jesus took the sins of the world upon himself. He took our place, he offered himself when it should have been us, he who was sinless became sin for us and died on our behalf taking our sins down to the grave with him. And what was seen as the symbol of death became the symbol of life. What was once ashes has been restored to its original beauty, even better.

Tomorrow begins the Lenten journey. Have the ashes placed on your forehead. Repent and believe in the gospel. And look to the cross as the symbol that brings restoration to you and yours.

Easter's a comin'.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Next month I will be going to North Carolina to lead a Cornerstone Celebration which is a local church ministry focused on the mighty act of God's intervention in human history. Specifically I'll be preaching on the incarnation (Christmas), the Atonement, (Good Friday) the resurrection (Easter) and the coming of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost). I also will be leading a Faith-Sharing workshop which I hope will better ground the participants in what the Christian faith means and the importance of sharing it with others.

I also will be leading the Faith Sharing workshop at our church on February 10 at 2:00 pm. This is the first time I am using this particular material so the church here in Leoti is helping me prepare for the teaching time in North Carolina. So far we have about 20 signed up here at the church. If you'd like to participate, call the church office at 620-375-4554.

But the real reason I am writing is to ask this question as it pertains to the faith:

How much difference would it make in your life if at midnight tonight you ceased to believe in Jesus Christ?


I highly encourage you to ponder that question and then I'd like to hear your comments. For those of you who will be taking the class, you have a heads up to at least one of the questions I'll be asking and addressing.

Kyle is about to commit himself to going to college at Southwestern College in Winfield. Had a good visit on Monday. What say you?

Do you ever watch Everybody Loves Raymond? Talk about disfunctional. Yet it's not much different than what's happening in so many families these days.

The buegill as our state fish? Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

So the Europeans don't want to give an award to the authors of a book with the three little pigs because it might offend Muslims? Come on, people need to get a life.

Jesus came to simplify things. So why do we continually make things more difficult?

I'm officiating a funeral tomorrow. "Where O death is your victory? Where O death is your sting? But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!"

Friday night means another basketball game. "Keep thoughts to self. Keep thoughts to self. Keep thoughts to self. Keep thoughts to self".

BREAKING CAMP!!

Last Sunday I preached a sermon entitled "Time to Break Camp" from Deuteronomy 1:6-8. As you recall God reminded the Israelites that they had stayed at the mountain long enough and it was time to "break camp", to get a move on. The mountain was not the destination, it was merely a stopping place in the midst of a journey, a time of preparation for entering the promised land.

I wonder at times if we as individuals or as the church find ourselves at a stopping place regarding our walk with Christ. And then as a result, we find ourselves stuck "on the mountain", at a stopping place with no intention to move forward. I don't believe that is what God has in store for us as as it pertains to our relationship with him and with others. Even the Apostle Paul said "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal...". Implied in those words are God's words to"break camp", to move forward, to forget the past and get on with it.

I want to challenge and encourage you all to take the necessary steps to continue the faith journey, to continue to grow in your walk with Jesus, to continue to move beyond being comfortable, maybe even complacent. The Israelites were on the move to the promised land but found themselves stuck at the base of a mountain for too long. We as Christians and as the church are on the same journey - to the promised land. But we can't get there unless we get a move on. Let's break camp, shall we?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Hear these words of good news once again from the gospel of Luke:

1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register.
4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

MONDAY MUSINGS!!

A few thoughts as another week is upon us:

What a great Christmas program last night at the church. The kids did great. Thanks to all who helped make it such a great evening.

We received some much needed moisture this past week. A little rain, a little ice, and some snow to top it off on Friday. Thankfully the ice wasn't as bad as it was to our east. Because of the weather 2 basketball games were postponed. Will make one up at Oakley on Tuesday night.

My folks celebrate their 50th on Thursday. ML and I are going to make a quick trip Wednesday to take them out to eat in McPherson. Will return that night. Congrats to them. See......., it can be done.

Kyle finishes classes this week. He'll be done Wednesday at noon with two semester tests in the morning. He finished his college algebra class last week. Hallelujah!

We're working on a new web page at the church. The address is www.leotiumc.com but we are having a few little mishaps. Bear with us as we work to correct the miscues.

Only a week left until Christmas. Are you ready? Not talking about shopping and presents and all. I'm speaking of your heart. It's so easy to get caught up in all the busyness of the season and before you know it, the 25th has come and gone. I hate when that happens to me- most of the time it is my own fault. So when you all get together with your families why not take a moment to read Jesus' birth accounts in Luke and Matthew before you open presents. That's what we do every year and it helps keep everything else in perspective.

If you live in Leoti or are coming to town to see family I invite you to the Christmas eve service on the 24th at 6:00 pm. It promises to be a special time.

"PICKEN AND GRINNIN"

Todd and Melissa came out this weekend with some of the youth group from their church (and a couple dads) to go pheasant hunting. Had a great time although it was cold and icy. Saw a lot of birds and bagged quite a few. Lots of fun. The first night saw a little video game entertainment at our house. Note the following pictures.







Ever played Guitar Hero? Neither had Melissa but she certainly got hooked. It became addictive. She's not quite ready for the expert level but look out Eddie Van Halen.

My brother Rod and his boy Evan came out to hunt with us. Craig Sheppard was our "hunting guide". Brock was the designated "pheasant gutter". A great weekend together.

LOCAL OUTREACH PROJECT!!

I'm so glad you all enjoyed my last blog which was like the Seinfeld show - all about nothing. Now for something of more import.

I've been trying to be able to post all day but had some computer gliches. Anyway, some of you know that Marge Davis has macular degeneration and it has been a real struggle for her. However, tomorrow she and Dale are going to Oberlin to be fitted with a new type of glasses that will enable her to see faces, possibly read musical notes for the piano, and give her some new focus in a world that has been quite blurry for several years. These glasses however are quite expensive - over $3,000 so many at the church wanted to help by giving a donation on her behalf. If you would like to do so, please make your check out to the church and designate it "Davis". We'll make sure it is used to help offset the expense of the glasses. We tried to get the word out over the weekend but not all were made aware so now you know.

Marge is so excited and I am excited that we can be of help to her. Thanks for your help!

FAMILY FUN!!

Have you ever played Wii? It's an interactive video game and as you can see ML and her sister are boxing (on Thanksgiving day). I've never seen my wife get so excited about punching somebody's lights out. Loved every minute of it.

And here you see the little man sitting on Grandpa's lap. He's quite relaxed and at peace with the world. Sure enjoyed him. Hopefully it won't be so long before I see him the next time. Actually it will be at Christmas. He JUST might get a present or two.

Had a great time with all our family on both sides. I'm truly blessed.

BRAYDEN BOUND!!

Okay, here's the deal. We're heading out on Thursday to catch up with some family for Thanksgiving. First to Newton for a get-together with M.L.'s side of the family. Then that night we will stay at Todd and Melissa's in McPherson. The next morning we will go to my folks for a dinner around noon or so. That evening/night we will head to Topeka to see the little man (and Eric and Andrea). I've not seen him since August so we have a little grandpa/grandson time to take care of. Looking forward to it.

So, you all have a great Thanksgiving holiday. And be careful that you don't forget to offer thanks to the Lord in the midst of the busy weekend (see my Pastor's Corner in the Standard).

What a great job by the cast of The Music Man. It was wonderful entertainment and the hard work sure paid off. Tori (the director) deserves a lot of credit, especially in light of some of the "extra stress" that was handed to her. I hope a lot of you were able to attend. It was well worth the time and the money.

MONDAY MUSINGS

EMMAUS (pt.2)

After returning home from Garden on Sunday I am convinced that God uses a "plethra" of methods to draw his people to him through special and powerful ways. Obviously the Walk to Emmaus is one of them. In my prior post someone responded in a way that suggested the walk as being a prerequisite or and additonal work that must take place to get "closer to the gates of heaven". Far from it. Yes, it draws us closer to "Him" but JESUS is the only "gate" and faith in him allows us to enter. The Walk is merely one of many tools used by God to grow in our relationship with Christ. Disciple Bible Study, the Ashram retreat, small group bible studies, Promise Keepers, Women of Faith, etc., etc., are all used by God to draw us closer to him in faith. Praise God for the ways he helps us grow and the ways he "fires us up" for him. Would I like everyone to go on the walk? Sure! But it's by far not the only way people can draw close to Jesus. I'm for whatever God chooses to do.

We all know that life is filled with mountaintop and valley experiences. Why not pursue and experience the mountaintop when you can? There are always plenty of valleys out there.

I am so thankful for what God did in the lives of the women this past weekend. It was awesome to see him work in their lives and am excited for others to hear the stories.

Never apologize about an experience with God. Never!

ANOTHER AWESOME WALK!!

Just returned from participating in the Walk to Emmaus at Garden City. It's always amazing to see what God does during those 72 hours together. Actually, it's miraculous.

It was humbling once again to be on the team. I was blessed to work with some unbelievable guys led by Steve Mayo (Lay director) and Tod Anthony (spiritual director). And then to observe God's work in the guys from the first day to the last was great - especially watching the guys from Leoti.

Thanks for praying for us all. Now our attention turns towards the women who will be attending this Thursday - Michelle Sheppard, Teresa Clark, Kendra Perry, Marilyn Wilbur, and Cindy Crays. Please keep them in your prayers. They are about to meet God in a new and exciting way.

BY THE WAY, DID I TELL YOU.........

I'm going to be a GRANDPA -AGAIN!!!!! Congrats to Todd and Melissa. We are super excited as our little Grandson Brayden will have someone to play with soon. Melissa is due the 23rd of May. (Kyle graduates the 17th. Should be interesting). This is an answer to prayer. Yep, I'm going out to order my cane and hearing aids today. You know how it is being a grandpa and all.

Other excitement - Thursday the 18th kicks off the fall Walk to Emmaus in Garden City. We have 10 people from Leoti going plus a couple of us working the team. Be in prayer for Gary Wilbur, Jason Perry, Craig Sheppard, Kevin Clark, Matt Crays, Todd Schumacher, and me as we head to Garden tomorrow at 4:30. Can't wait to see what God has up his sleeve. (Does God have sleeves - or even arms for that matter?)

BITTERSWEET

I was saddened to hear of the death of one of my best friend's mom, Ellie Zerger, this past week at Marion. Actually, she died on my birthday, October the 4th. It was totally unexpected and was a shock to us all.

In the picture you see Reuben (Ellie's husband), and Julie and Tim, great friends from high school. I made a red eye trip to Marion Tuesday afternoon to spend a little time with them. It was a great evening although I wish it could have been for a different reason. It had been years since I'd seen them so we had a little catching up to do. Talked about our great times in school and especially the great times at their house where Ellie was more than hospitable. Needless to say, I never went hungry when I was at their house. She was such a great person and always treated me as one of her own. I am grateful I will see her again by virtue of our faith in Christ.

It's too bad that we seem to let time get away from us to the point that we don't stay in touch like we should. But, as is the case with good friends, when we do get together it's as if we have not missed a beat. Such was the case on Tuesday evening.

My prayers continue to go out to the family. I'd ask you to keep them in your prayers as well.

WOW, WHAT A WEEK!

Trying to catch up a little today after being gone most of the week. You can see a couple pictures from when I was in Towanda - one with Todd who helped me with music on Monday night and their youth group from the night before. Good pizza and a great bunch of kids. The meetings went very well. God blessed the time.

Returned Wednesday morning in time to get ready for God Squad that night. Left for Denver the next morning to see Chris (see above picture). He's in pretty good shape for the shape he's in. It's going to take a lot of rehab - keep him in your prayers.

While in Denver I was having some problems with a tooth - lots of pain. To make a long story short, I ended up having a tooth pulled Friday morning in Garden City. I was never so glad to have a tooth pulled. Hallelujah!

Went to Kyle's ball game Friday night and then returned to Garden for an Emmaus meeting on Saturday. I'm thrilled tomorrow is Sunday - possibly a day of rest?? (After church, not during).

CALL TO PRAYER!

You will remember that I was privileged to baptize Chris Antonelli back in July in our local swimming pool. Chris was involved in a serious accident this morning and was flown to Denver for evaluation, surgery, etc.. Would you commit to pray for Chris for successful surgery, minimal pain, and a quick recovery and healing? Thanks in advance for your prayers and for what the Lord is going to do.

JUST meandering about.........

Typical weather for this time of year. In the 50's earlier this week. Today it is in the 90's. Crazy. I love the fall so let's get on with the cooler weather.

A year ago I just returned from an elk hunt in the Rockies. Couldn't go this year but a few of the guys went. However, the elk are still safe and sound. No luck for the guys (except for a little bad luck with a horse). But, beautiful weather so hey, that's worth something.

The high school f-ball team had a rough go again this last Friday losing to undefeated Lakin. Our offense is still looking to get into sinc. Elkhart should provide the remedy for what ails us this weekend.

How bout the KSU Wildcats? Looking good. Can't wait to play the hawks.

Where has the time gone? It is the middle of September. How can that be? It always get real busy this time of year. The farmers are in the thick of things - corn, milo, planting wheat, etc. The church is in high gear with God SQuad, studies, meetings, and prep for budget and conference.

The Walk to Emmaus is a month away. Sounds like 10 from the area are going. That's awesome. Some of us on the team were at the training yesterday and it looks like it will be another GREAT time.

I'm heading to Towanda this weekend to lead some renewal services - Sunday through Tuesday. Looking forward to it but have a lot to do prior to Saturday. Keep me in your prayers. They are a great bunch of folks over there. (Anyone from Towanda or from that area reading this?)

I've been thinking a lot about worship lately - styles, music, liturgy, the focus, etc.. I'm curious - How do you define worship and what constitutes "good worship" for you?

Grandpa update and misc. stuff....

As you can see, we have one happy family - Eric, Andrea, and little Brayden. Kyle took these pics last weekend when he and M.L. went to Topeka to check on the little man. All is going well. Brayden is gaining some weight - eating well ( a Just tradition). Mary Lou made the quilt that Brayden is laying on. Sounds like a grandma thing doesn't it?

Kyle's f-ball team took it on the chin last night losing 26-6. Our defense played great only allowing 2 tds on 2 big plays. The other tds came on two interceptions for scores. Over all, we played with them (Johnson) - a big team. next week gets tougher playing undefeated Lakin.

Listened to Todd broadcast Bethany football on the internet for a little while tonight. He and another guy are the "Voices of the Swedes" this year. They sounded good.

Preaching from John 4 tomorrow, the last part of it, following the woman at the well passage. Read it - great stuff.

Cooler weather has arrived. Ahh yes - I love fall.................................
